Tips for a No-Sweat Summer Move

Are you wondering why there has been so many moving trucks around your community in the past couple weeks?  The answer to that might be because 70 percent of all moves take place between Memorial Day and Labor Day Weekend!

Wallkill Valley Federal Savings & Loan makes the process of buying a home personal & easy! We want to come along side you to help you as you transition into a new home. If you have just closed on a new house and are getting ready to move yourself, there are several things you can do to make the move a little bit easier.

Reserve your moving truck or hire movers in advance.
Summer is a busy time for moving. When you book your truck or hire your movers in advance, it significantly reduces the stress involved with having to rely on yourself on moving day.  Plus, it will make sure you get into your new home exactly when you want to!

Do not forget to turn the utilities on in your new house.
Nothing is worse than arriving in your new home and having it be hotter than it is outside.  Make switching on the air conditioning before you move one of your biggest priorities. You want to be able to take a break in your nice, cool home after a day full of heavy lifting.

Don’t forget bottled water and plenty of sunscreen.
Water is your body’s most important nutrient so staying hydrated is always important.  It is especially important when are up and about all day such as during a move.  Have enough water on hand for anyone helping you move such as movers, friends or family.  It’s easy to forget to take the time to apply sunscreen, so setting an alarm on your phone for every two hours can help.

Dress appropriately.
This tip may seem like it goes without saying, but in the chaos of the moving process, you may have packed everything and completely forgotten to set aside clothing that will be appropriate for the day’s activities.  Wear something light and breathable with light colors, as to not attract the sun.  Sunglasses and a hat can also provide further protection from the sun.  Comfortable shoes are also a really good idea!

Know what to put in the moving truck.
If you think outside is a bit toasty, it’s even worse in the moving truck! Were you going to pack your favorite scented candle or a bunch of perishable items in the truck? Think twice before you do.  Rather than putting them in regular cardboard boxes in the truck, consider putting them in your car or in coolers.  Try to finish up any perishable items in your house before the day of the move.

Pay attention to the forecast.
Nothing is worse than when the world decides to rain on your parade…literally.  Summer is the season where Mother Nature unleashes her thunderous wrath.  The weather during the summer can be unpredictable and thunderstorms can appear seemingly out of nowhere.  Pay attention to the forecast to make sure that you won’t get surprised.  If rain is on the horizon, don’t panic, prepare!  Set aside your rain coat and boots.  Grab a box of trash bags and blankets to protect items as they are loaded into and out of the truck.

Don’t forget to take care of your pets.
While you are busy handling everything involving the move, it is easy to forget our four-legged friends.  The heat affects our animals just as much as it affects us and it might be hard to set aside time to take them for walks or find a shady place to set down their carrier.  You might want to consider leaving your furry counterparts with a friend or family member for the day.

Pack an “unpacking” box and a box for the first night.
The movers and truck are gone and your house is filled with dozens of boxes.  Where do you begin?  It’s helpful to pack an “unpacking” box filled with scissors, trash bags, tools, and other necessities that will make the process of unloading a lot easier.  In addition, it’s confusing to find where you put your pajamas, toothbrush, coffeemaker and mugs while in the moving process.  Set aside a box with all of the things you need for your first night so you don’t need to go crazy hunting in each and EVERY box.
